이번 상영회에서는 60년대 영국작가조합의 창립 멤버로서 라우쉔버그나, 즉흥음악, 여러 회화적 영향 아래 멀티 프로젝션 혹은 확장 영화라 불리는 다양한 작품을 만든 작가이자, 이론가인 말콤 르 그라이스Malcolm Le Grice의 디지털 작품이 5월 부터 총 세 달간 상영된다.

5월 프로그램에는 60~80년대 컴퓨터로 만들었던 애니메이션 작품들, 장면을 데이터로 구조화하고 이를 사운드와 이미지로 추출하여 전통적인 시각적 사운드의 한 측면을 표현해낸 작품이 포함되어 있다. 특히 Chronos Fragmented는 Channel-4의 의뢰를 받아 자신의 이전 작품과는 달리 개인적인 작업을 넘어서는 조금 다른 형태의 장편으로 말콤 르 그라이스는 80년대 이후 많은 디지털 장편 연작을 제작하였다.

 

작가 소개 말콤 르 그라이스Malcolm Le Grice
1940년에 출생한 말콤 르 그라이스는 화가로 시작하여 필름과 60년대 중반 부터는 컴퓨터 작품들을 발표해왔다.
그의 작품은 다수의 국제적인 영화제에서 소개되었으며, 8회 파리 비엔날레, 카젤 다큐멘타,  비엔나 현대 미술관 X-스크린 등 전시에도 참가하였다.
이 밖에 퐁피두 센터, 뉴욕현대미술관, 파리 르부르, 영국 테이트 모던 등 뮤지엄에서 특별전을 가진 바 있으며, 가장 최근에는 디지털 인스톨레이션 작품을 테이트 모던에서 발표하였다.

퐁피두 센터, 왕립 벨기에 필름 아카이브, 오스트리아 국립 필름 도서관, 독일 시네마테크 아카이브, 아비뇽 실험영화 아카이브 등에 작품이 소장되어 있다.
이론적인 활동도 활발하게 해오면서 '추상 영화를 넘어서Abstract Film and Beyond' (1977, Studio Vista and MIT),
'디지털 시대의 실험영화 Experimental Cinema in the Digital Age' the British Film Institute (2001) 등을 출간하였다.
현재 University of the Arts London의 교수이자 데이비드 커티스와 함께 "British Artists Film and Video Study Collection"의 디렉터를 하고 있다.
