1988년 4월 어느 날, 베이징에서 작가로 생계를 꾸려온 장츠가 결혼하여 중국을 떠난다고 내게 말했다. 그녀의 미래의 남편인 조지는 은발의 미국인이었다. 장씨 집에서 그를 만난 사람들은 모두 그가 헤밍웨이처럼 생겼다고 말했고 장씨는 그를 "나의 아빠"라고 불렀다. 그 일로 인해 난 생각하기 시작했다. 내 주변 사람들, 80년대 초 베이징에 오기 위해 직업과 거주 등록을 포기하며 이상을 품었던 젊은 예술가들이 곧 '베이징에서의 유랑'을 마치고 흩어지기 시작했다. 나는 정말로 그들에 대한 영화를 만들어야 했다. 난 언제나 그런 비범한 예술가들이 겪은 삶을 기록하고자 했으며, 내가 만들고 싶은 어떠한 제약이나 간섭에서 벗어난 "진정한 다큐멘터리"를 만들기 위해서는 독립적 제작자가 되어야만 했다. 1988년 8월에 촬영이 시작되었고 영화는 1990년 중반에 완성되었다. 이 기간 동안 다큐멘터리의 주인공 4명 중 3명은 외국인과 결혼해 중국을 떠났다. 그들 중 오직 한 명만이 베이징에 남아 있었다. 이 영화의 제목 <유량북경-마지막 몽상가들>은 이러한 사건들의 변화로 인해 자연스레 굳혀진 것이다. 이 영화가 완성되고 80년대는 막을 내렸다. 어떤 중국 젊은이들에게 이는 아마도 꿈과 낭만주의의 시대의 종말을 알리는 신호일지도 모른다. 90년대는 완전히 다른 이야기가 될 것이다. 이 영화 속의 사람들은 "예술적 삶"을 열망했지만, 아마도 지금은 "삶의 예술"을 바랄지도 모른다. 이게 지금 내 생각이다. 하지만 촬영하는 동안 나의 유일한 관심사는 진실된 관찰자로서 정직한 다큐멘터리를 만드는 것 뿐이었다. One day in April, 1988, Zhang Ci, who has been making her living as a writer in Beijing, told me that she was getting married and leaving China. Her future husband, George, was a silver-haired American. People who’ve met him at Zhang Ci’s place all said he looked like Hemingway; and Zhang Ci called him “ My Papa”. That got me thinking. The people around me, all these young artists with their ideals, who gave up their jobs and residence registrations to come to Beijing in the early 80s, would soon close the “ Bumming in Beijing” chapter in their lives and disperse. I should really start making a movie on them. What they went through I have always wanted to document the lives of such an extraordinary group of artists, and to become an independent producer, to make the kind of “real documentary” that I want to make, free of constraints or interference. Shooting began in August, 1988, and the film was completed in mid-1990. During this time, three out of four of my subjects have married foreigners and left China. Only one of them remained in Beijing. The title of this film: Bumming in Beijing-The Last Dreamers, grew out naturally from this turn of events. With the completion of this film, the 80s drew to a close. To a certain group of Chinese young people, it perhaps signaled the end of an era of dreams and romanticism. The 90s will be a totally different story. The people in the film aspired to “a life of art”, perhaps they now aspire to “ the art of life.” These are my thoughts now. But during shooting, my only concern was to make an honest documentary as truthful observer. (Wu Wenguang)
